To keep the condition the same you should really hand wash it, otherwise using a washing machine will ruin the fiber of the material.

You can, but it's most likely they will get the little frayed bumps that soft material does after years of use.

i would prefer to hand wash them in woolite. follow the directions on the fabric care tags if it's still there.
