How do I wash/dry my Tommy Bahama women’s silk shirt? I dont want to dryclean it?

If you’re not going to dry clean it then you need to either invest in Dryell ($13-15) or hand wash it in a mild detergent (Woolite) and lay flat to dry.

I have stained my silk blouse. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stain?

I have stained my silk blouse. Does anyone know how to get rid of the stain?

Any Ideas?

Aside from a drycleaner, I know this will sound stupid, but try soaking it in some milk. My mum used to do it to our clothes when they had blood and grass stains from footy and they came out. She swore by it?

Course, being my mum, she may have added nappy san… ;-)

Is it possible to dye a white silk top black?

Posted by Trudy on January 18th, 2010 and filed under silk tops | 4 Comments »

I have a halter neck white silk top. I want to dye it black for halloween, is it possible to do this? It does not have to be perfect because I want it to be edgy. The top has ruffles, would this make it more difficult? Thank you for your help

Yes, it is possible to dye a white silk top black. Silk dyes easily as long as you use an acid dye bath. This means adding an acid to the dye so the fibers “open up” to react and absorb the dye. Acetic acid is usually recommended and it’s easily available at the supermarket where it is sold under its more common name of “vinegar”

To dye silk: start with a large bucket or glass pot or enameled vessel. A cheap plastic bucket is best because the black will stain everything. Don’t use the washing machine for dyeing, no matter what the dye package says. Use any supermarket dye and follow the package directions and add a quarter cup of vinegar to the dye-water.

Be sure there’s enough dye solution for the item to freely swim about in the dye. It shouldn’t be bunched up. Pre-wet the item before placing it in the dye. Wetting allows the dye to permeate the item. Leave it in the dye twice as long as the package states. When the time is up remove it and rinse it well until there is no more excess dye coming out.

Squeeze the excess water out of the item and let it dry. If it’s wrinkled then press the item on the inside using a warm iron, place a cloth between the iron’s surface and the silk to prevent scorching. When finished you should have a reasonably black top. Here’s the RIT dye site, they have lots of tips and tricks for dyeing. Be sure to add vinegar to the dyewater, silk needs the extra boost. http://www.ritdye.com/Home.1.lasso

How do I to remove a red wine stain on a cream colored, thick women’s silk shirt that has already been dry cleaned?

How do I to remove a red wine stain on a cream colored, thick women’s silk shirt that has already been dry cleaned?

I’ve actually tried this on a new shirt I had spilled red wine down the front. Just mix Dawn dish washing soap in Peroxide soak the stain. It will disappear. I got the info on a site a while back.

Silk Shirt came back from cleaners with a faded white stain?

Posted by Trudy on December 15th, 2009 and filed under Caring for silk shirts | 2 Comments »

100%  Silk shirt came back from cleaners with a faded looking white stain on it. They paid for the shirt. Is there any way to salvage the shirt though as they don’t make this any more?

I would take it back to the cleaners
